What GSM means
GSM is the weight of one square metre of fabric in grams. A higher GSM means more fabric per square metre: usually thicker, warmer and more structured. It is the quickest way to compare hoodie fabrics. Read more in fabric GSM explained.
Typical hoodie weights
These are general industry ranges; exact numbers vary by fabric and knit.
| Weight | Typical GSM | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight | ~240–300 | Soft, light, drapes | Warm climates, layering, summer merch |
| Midweight | ~300–380 | Balanced, everyday | Teams, schools, corporate, most brands |
| Heavyweight | 380+ | Thick, structured, boxy | Premium streetwear, cold climates |
Choosing by use
- Sports teams and schools: midweight. Warm enough, washes well, good value.
- Leavers hoodies (UK): midweight to heavyweight for a quality feel.
- Streetwear brands: heavyweight for a premium, boxy silhouette.
- Gulf and Pakistani summers: lightweight or French terry.
- Corporate events: midweight, which prints and embroiders well.
Fabric type matters too
At the same GSM, brushed fleece feels warmer than loopback French terry. See fleece vs French terry.
Other quality signs
- Ribbed cuffs and hem that spring back
- Double-layer hood
- Flat or neatly finished seams
- Pre-shrunk fabric
- Strong eyelets and drawcords

Frequently asked questions
Is a higher GSM always better quality?
No. GSM measures weight, not quality. Yarn, knit and finishing matter just as much. A well-made midweight hoodie can outperform a poorly made heavy one.
Can we feel samples first?
Yes. We can send fabric swatches and make a sample hoodie before bulk production.
